We had a fantastic response to our campaign outside Leigh-on-Sea Post Office in Rectory Road despite the snow and freezing conditions. On top of collecting several hundred signatures from local residents opposing any moves to close the Post Office, we were joined by around 60 people for our ‘Lightning demo’ at 12pm.
Although it’s obviously not an issue specifically affecting Prittlewell, the moves afoot surrounding the closures and franchising of the publicly owned Post Office network is something that concerns us all. The main Post Office in Southend High Street is already destined to shut with its services being franchised to the WH Smiths next door on the 1st floor – meaning access problems for the disabled and mothers with prams. This has led to fears of safety issues should the premises need evacuating in a hurry.
At the moment managers are unable to say what will happen when the Post Office shuts, but nationally a total of 37 are set to close this year with the loss of 300 jobs, on top of the 93 branches that closed last year.
Protesters from the Labour Party, Green Party, CWU & other unions were joined by members of the public, young and old, as well as local celebrity Phil Jupitus (pictured here with Labour councillor Julian Ware Lane)
