Southend Council Scrutiny Powers Giveaway

Southend Council’s People Scrutiny Committee last night voted to give away its powers of oversight on some of the most important changes taking place to the NHS in our lifetime, to a Joint Committee with Essex County Council and possibly Thurrock Council.

Not only have the Council unnecessarily relinquished the democratic powers bestowed on them by the people of Southend, but if local residents want to attend meetings where the STPs are being discussed and how over £400 million of cuts are being made to local NHS services, they will have to travel to Chelmsford or Thurrock on many occasions instead of the Civic Centre in Victoria Avenue.

Sustainability & Transformation Plan Scrutiny has now been delegated by Southend Borough Council to another body.

Full details of the plans can be found in my previous post – here, but essentially this move just adds a further layer of bureaucracy and distances the decision-making process further way from the public’s sight – exactly what the Essex Success Regime want to do, where their plans to make drastic cuts to health services are better hidden from public scrutiny.

This is a move that I, along with my fellow committee members from Save Southend NHS are vehemently opposed to and back the stance taken by Thurrock Council that the Joint Committee “… is creating another layer of bureaucracy and is potentially taking power and authority away from the [Thurrock] Scrutiny process…”
